There's no point having a website without visitors; so I'm preparing a letter to send to a dozen or so other sites suggesting mutual links. If you might be willing to link to this site, can you take a look at the letter, please.
Hello;
I've started a one-person blog of political and environmental observations based in the UK.
www.plagueyear.com
The description on the Home Page is: "This web journal is intended to be a personal contemplation of the politics in the UK and of the state of the environment:and of the plagues of power and greed which beset them. With occasional diversions."
I write two or three postings a day onto a journal page; after a few days I move them onto classified pages which include:
The Big Brother State: Liberties, ID Cards, Surveillance, Police, Control,
The Body Politic: The Thought Police, Multiculturalism, Corruption, Competence,
Health and Safety, Health, Education, Economics, Prime Ministers,
The Way We Treat Each Other: Middle East, Religion & Politics, Sharia, Holocaust and History,
The Environment: Pollution and Climate, Population
Religion and The Atheist: Social Darwinism, Dawkins & Religion
I don't aim to report news but rather to react to it as a citizen. The site is broadly left-liberal, but with some self-indulgence and eccentricities. It's distinctly middle-brow.
I started writing in September 2007: the site was established for visiting at the end of January 2008. By good luck Google found it within a day without any help from me, so it is being visited; the figure is about a dozen visits a day (max so far, 33) and climbing slowly. I seem to have about four regular visitors from a university site (?) in the US and one or two from Canada. There is an email feedback option (only four fairly short replies so far).
I have embedded topical links to other sites, plus three permanent recommendations (NO2ID, Wikileaks, Medialens).
I've got to the point where I want to start being part of the debate, and have people argue with me. To that end, I'd like to set up links with up to perhaps a dozen sites, like mine in their topics but perhaps a bit different in political viewpoint and treatment, so that visitors to those sites might also come to try mine. And to that end, I'm sending this note to 12 sites to request consideration for a mutual-link arrangement. (I'll make a list of these sites in case anyone asks.)
I'm not going to claim that my site is very sophisticated, either in presentation or material (quirky might be the best word); even the web-creation programme I'm using is fairly primitive. But I'm new to this, and we all have to start somewhere (and a bit of encouragement does no harm!).
Would you please visit my site and consider this request? I don't mind the answer 'No' so long as you don't mind me asking.
If you feel that links to your site might not be appropriate, or anyway if you know of a site which might link to mine, I'd be very grateful if you could pass this request on.
With thanks for your attention (and patience!).
Best Wishes,
Sam Butler.
